Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said organ donation was one of the noblest acts. He called for everyone to partake in eye donation and inspire others.
Speaking on the valedictory function of ‘National Eye Donation Fortnight’ organized by Samadrishti Kshamata Vikas Evam Anusandhan Mandal, Naidu described eye donation as the best donation. SAKSHAM is a charitable organization that works for the empowerment of people with disabilities.
Terming visual impairment as one of the biggest health challenges, Naidu highlighted that around 46 lakhs people have blindness in India. Most of them are in the age range of above 50 years.
Emphasizing the low numbers of organ donors in the country, he called for changing the mindset. He said that this could be done by spreading awareness and building appropriate medical infrastructure for organ donation at the district level.
He quoted the examples of characters like King Shibi and Rishi Dadhichi from Hinduism. They had donated their bodies for the welfare of others. He appealed to redefine the values in the modern context to inspire people and promote organ donation.
“By donating an organ, one sets an example for others to work toward the larger good of the society,” he said.
The Vice President also expressed happiness that eye banking activities have resumed in non-COVID hospitals after being adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
