Padma Vibhushan Professor Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, the doyen of statistics, was felicitated on his 100th birthday at an online symposium. The Government of India granted the felicitation for Professor Rao’s pioneering contributions in the field of statistics. He is the most prominent person of statistics whose work has influenced not just this field but has had wide-ranging indications for various fields.
“Professor Rao’s contribution in the data field is enormous, and it has immensely benefited the country. Professor Rao’s work has had deep impacts on genetics, which has greatly influenced the work we do presently. It is astonishing to see the breadth of work Professor Rao has taken on,” said Principal Scientific Advisor Professor Krishnaswamy Vijay Raghavan. Professor Raghavan was one of the distinguished guests at the felicitation ceremony. He also added that the Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao Advanced Institute set up by him has truly transformed India’s data collection and analysis.
Professor Ashutosh Sharma, Department of Science and Technology Secretary, said that Professor Rao worked on data around 70 years ago and was much ahead of his time. Professor Rao is not only a scientist but an institution builder too. The world will always be grateful to Professor Rao for his pioneering contributions to statistics.
Professor Shekhar Mande, Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, conveyed his warm greetings to Professor Rao for his 100th birthday on behalf of the entire council family. Professor Bimal Roy, Chairman of the National Statistical Commission, recalled Professor Rao’s understanding of statistics as a subject not being limited to studying the issue to solve problems on a single topic, but solve problems in other disciplines.
