Cabinet condoles the sad demise of Shri Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India

Adieu, Pranab Da!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the demise of former President Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee. The Union Cabinet bid farewell to Mr. Mukherjee and observed a two-minute silence.

Mr. Pranab Mukherjee was the 13th President of India. He assumed the office in 2012.

“His wise counsel on key policy matters will never be forgotten by me,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A man of humble beginnings, Mr. Mukherjee, was born on December 11, 1935, in the small village of Mirati in Birbhum District, West Bengal. He holds a Master’s degree in History and Political Science and a Law degree from the University of Kolkata. In 1969 he was elected to Rajya Sabha. His political career spans over five decades of exemplary service to the Government and Parliament.

His love for reading drove Mr. Mukherjee to write several books on the Indian economy and nation-building. He received the Best Parliamentarian Award in 1997, Padma Vibhushan in 2008, and Bharat Ratna in 2019.

Prime Minister Modi hailed him as ‘a scholar par excellence and a towering statesman.’
